Re: exchange 2003 database corrupt, failed raid, no backup

OK -

I ended up using Ontrack PowerControls, and am in the process of extracting as much as possible to a blank store.

However, it is giving errors on certain messages in certain mailboxes, and appears to be skipping those messages.

My question is, if I bring the server back online, and connect a cached Exchange mode user to their mailbox - if some of their emails are missing on the server due to the errors, will they automatically sync back up from the OST file? Or will they be deleted from the OST file?

What will happen??

Thanks!!!

call them...it's not inexpensive, but a GREAT tool...it has really helped me in some tight spots...not because I didn't have a backup...but other situations...it's really useful...

No kidding about the backup. They changed their admin password, didn't tell anyone, which caused the nightly backup job to not run, and they weren't checking their backup logs for a month.

It's a nightmare.

I can't even find a price for Recovery Manager on Quest's site...

with an error like that, I'd definitely contact MS...if you do eseutil, at least make a copy of the file, first. I, personally, would mount a new, empty database, after moving the old one to a safe location, then obtain Quest's Recovery Manager for Exchange, and use that to extract all the data from the database that will not mount...a backup, of course, would have been better, and less expensive, but it depends on how important the data is to you and the customer...

What could Microsoft do to help?

Any recommend steps if I try ESEUTIL?

We have a crazy situation here.

Client wasn't running a backup for the past month (long story) and in the
process of trying to get a good backup, the server was rebooted and the C:
mirror where Exchange was installed failed for some reason.

We replaced the controller and cable, and Adaptec had us recreate the
array
and run a quick init which brought the drive back online. The first thing
we did once we got the server booted was start a backup.

However, Veritas BackupExec gave an error during the Exchange backup
saying
the store was a "corrupt file". Checking out the error, I found that even
though the services started without error the Exchange 2003 databases will
not mount.

In the event log, it shows:

Information Store (5132) First Storage Group: Database C:\Program
Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb: Page 1890435 (0x001cd883) failed
verification due to a flush-order dependency mismatch. This page should
have flushed before page 1682167 (0x0019aaf7), but the latter page has
instead flushed first. Recovery/restore will fail with error -255. If this
condition persists then please restore the database from a previous
backup.
This problem is likely due to faulty hardware "losing" one or more flushes
on one or both of these pages sometime in the past. Please contact your
hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated at this point. The users do all have OST
files with the Exchange mailboxes cached if this can help recovery at all.

I'm trying to help them out here, but I feel like I've run out of options.

Any suggestions on getting this database back up and running? What steps
should I be taking?

Assuming you have no usable backups!

You could copy all the osts into psts.
Then after that close up all the Outlook clients. Dismount the store
and move out the edb and stm files and log files for that store to
another directory and after remouting the store a new, empty database
will be created.
Then copy the psts back into the empty mailboxes.
You would then need to create new Outlook profiles ( or delete the
existing osts) and the clients could then connect to their mailboxes.

NO guarantees! YMMV of course :P

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was thinking (fearing). When you say
copy an OST into PST, I'm assuming you mean export their existing cached
data to PSTs from each client, or is there an easier way?

That would be it. No other easy way unfortuantely.

Is there any recovery utility worth running on the existing damaged store
before I give up on it?

Well, there is eseutil. Or 3rd party software that may be able to
access it ( Quest or Ontrack).

Or call Microsoft PSS, not a bad option for $300.00
