The IO load on an undersized array of a non-optimal type. I've done many
posts comparing the performance of RAID 5 to RAID 1 or 10 to prove the
point. MS' whitepaper "Optimizing storage for Exchange Server 2003" even
states it outright.
The RAID 5 write penalty is just too high. The write performance of RAID 5
is generally inadequate unless you have lots of spindles. In fact, to meet
the performance of a mirror (2 drives), you'll need 4 or more drives in RAID
5. That's twice the spindles.
As write load increases, so does write latency. Online maintenance is a
high activity period. Combine that a RAID 5 rebuild... you get the picture.

John, I've stated that I've read that article but how do I get rid of
those corrupt emails or obtain that hotfix?
Michael, we have a RAID-5 array. We did have a drive fail right
before this started happening which lead me to believe that the array
is not working correctly. But why would it fail only during the
maintenance period if the array is the problem? Also, we replaced the
drive and it rebuilt...
