I dont think Exchange has been sold as a real collaboration tool since
version 4.0!
As for what we do use for email, inspite of being Microsoft Certified
Partners and having a free license of Exchange, we decided to pay for a copy
of a program called SurgeMail that has been working fantastic for us as an
email server with next to no maintenance and so far no security issues. It
may be security via obscurity, I don't really know and don't really care...
YEa, but doesnt it only support POP3 and IMAP?
I do know that I hear about Exchange servers getting attached all the timeI havent heard they get attacked all the time.
but never had even a hint of an issue with the SurgeMail system and I've
only installed upgrades to it once in 4 years.

I'm fairly certain that the Exchange server is not actually being used
for
anything at all. I know it's not being used for email for sure and
although
What do you use for email then? Why was Exchange installed?
it's "M:" drive was being used as a shared network drive for quite a
while, a few months ago that data was moved to a real drive and the "M:"
drive was removed.
Might be a pain to remove it now, you've broken Exifs for sure.
What I'd like to do is "shut off" the exchange server for a few days
without uninstalling it and see if anything "bad" happens. If not, then
I'm going to assume that it is safe to remove the server prior to my OS
upgrade.
Is this possible? If so how do I do it?
If you really aren't using it, then just turn of the server for a few
days, you'll soon find out if anything was..
In case you couldn't tell, I know next to nothing about exchange.
That's cool, first off turn the server off or stop the services for a
period of time to see if anything/anyone is actually using it.
