Bring up a new server and move mailboxes to it ASAP. Rebuild that

Is it possible to create a new database on the existing drive and then
move the mailboxes to that? I have limited hardware resources to deal
with, and don't know if we have the original exchange 5.5 install
disks. There is plenty of space on the existing drive for another
database of equal size.
Not in 5.5. You can have only one database per server.
.
