Periodically I am getting feedback from some of my users (today in fact)
that
emails that were sent from off-site to our store, arrive 4 hours or more
later. When I look at the email header on the message after itr arrives,
I
see a delay between my server and the senders ISP mail server by the
amount
mentioned. My question is, how do I determine why there is this delay?
Does
the sending server need to determine the cause or is there a way to
determine
what may be wrong from my end? I feel helpless telling my people that the
problem was on the remote site, but have nothing to go on except for the
times of the header. I guess I am looking for a way to do a little deeper
troubleshooting. Sorry, almost forgot: Exchange 2003 w SP2 running on
Win2k
SP4. Nothing shows up in the event log.
Thank you,

Enable SMTP logging and track down the connection attempts from the
remote server.
Also you could have a look at the current sessions for your default SMTP
virual server in ESM. I've noticed that spammers seem to frequently create
connections and then never let go, so if you see a bunch that have been
connected for more than, say, 5000 seconds, you might want to terminate
those sessions.
