Well... I'm out of gas, brother. I've got nothing left for you.
Unfortunately I've only been using RPC over HTTPS for the last 3 months with
about 15-20 users actually utilizing it and I never ran into your particular
issue. :/

So the RPC-HTTP tab on the front-end server has "RPC-HTTP front-end
server"
selected, and on the back-end server it has "RPC-HTTP back-end server"
selected?

Can you connect to your mailbox via OWA to the front-end server?

This is how I just configured my PC at home for RPC over HTTPS:
- Went into the Tools -> Email Accounts and added a new Microsoft
Exchange
Server account.
- In the Microsoft Exchange Server field, I entered the local name
of
the
back-end mail server (email.domain.local).
- I entered my username in the User Name: field.
- I clicked More Settings.
- Upon doing so I received an "action could not be completed"
error,
which I
just clicked OK to get past.
- This brought up a box to confirm my Exchange server and username,
which
I
clicked OK in.
- In the Exchange Server settings, I clicked on the Connection tab.
- At the bottom of this tab I checked the "Connect to my Exchange
mailbox
using HTTP" box.
- I clicked the Exchange Proxy Settings button.
- In the Exchange Proxy Settings I entered the address of my
front-end
box
after https:// in the field provided.
- I clicked OK to save and exit the Proxy Settings window.
- I clicked OK to save and exit the Exchange Server settings
window.
- I clicked the Check Name box, and was prompted for my
username/password
for the back-end mail server (which it should).
- I entered my credentials as domain\username and my password.
- This verified my login name and changed the username to my
Display
Name.
- I clicked Next.
- I clicked Finish.
Now when launching this profile Outlook connected to my mailbox and
started
synching my folders.
What I don't know--and I've never looked into this--is why Outlook
will
not
remember my username/password for these settings, despite my
checking
the
box to "remember password".

I have a FE-BE Exchange setup. Both servers are Server 2003 R2
with
Exchange 2003 SP2. I have installed the RPC Proxy service on the
front
end and have enabled the appropriate settings in System Manager.
I
have followed M$ guide to setting it up to the
letter..............twice. I have the same issue both times. I am
able
to navigate tohttps://server.domain.com/rpc/rpcproxy.dll, out in
credentials and the expected blank screen with the lock in the
status
bar. This tells me my cert is working and I can connect to the
front
end. When I set up Outlook, again following the M$ guide, I get
asked
for credentials but not from server.domain.com as before but from
the
local box, i.e mail.domain.local, and it will not let me
authenticate.
I am sure I have done something wrong but where?? Any help would
be
appreciated as this is the last step I need to take to finally
get
rid
of VPN access. Thanks in advance!
Joe--
Thanks for the help I have done all of that but still no luck. I do
not think it is a connectivity issue but an authentication issue.
Possibly some communication not happening between front end and GC
server. Any one run into this issue?
Joe--I can connect to OWA through my front end.BTW I am enforcing SSL
with OWA if it makes a difference. I understand what you are saying
about how it authenticates but am still puzzled as to why I cannot
authenticate using any username/pwd combo including local. Thanks for
your help!
Correct.
