Re: DST, and Time Zone Update Tool

On this same subject, if workstations are running Windows 2000 Pro and were
patched manually using the registry hack and vbs script provided in 914387,
will the /ONLYCREATEDPREPATCH switch recognize this as a patched system and
the date that it was "patched?"

TIA

It will detect both 928388 and 931836.

Again, thanks for all the help, I really do appreciate it. We are a new
Exchange/Outlook shop and I'm new to e-mail administration for Microsoft
products. This has been one of the best ways to get answers to my
questions.

The one thing I'm still unsure about is what KB patch date the Tool will
pick up. KB928388 took place on 12/14/06 and KB931836 took place on
3/1/07 on
same PCs. If the tool picks up the earlier date, then we're OK running
it. If
the tool is specifically looking for the KB931836 vs. some value for DST
change, then we're better off having staff make manual changes to fix
their
appointments because the KB928388 did fix DST in the registry and any
appointments created between 12/14/06 and 3/1/07 for the DST period would
have the correct time zone.
Every comminication so far refers to KB931836 and doesn't mention
KB928388.
Does the tool recognize the first date DST time zone was changed
regardless
of which patch did it?

- The rebasing tool (TzMove.exe, and MsExTmz.exe, which in turn calls
TzMove.exe) will rebase both single instance and recurring appointments.
- If you've already applied KB 931836, and rebase appointments later -
single instance appointments will get wrongly rebased, recurring
appointments won't because they have time zone embedded in them.
- Using the /ONLYCREATEDPREPATCH option by itself will check the system
when
KB 931836 time zone update was applied to the OS, and only rebase
appointments in the affected period that were *created before the time
zone
update was applied to that computer*
- Appointments once rebased by either tool do not get rebased again.

1. Yes, all appointments within the affected DST period are impacted.
There's a patch for the Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft
Office
Outlook (KB 933146) that lets users run this using the
/ONLYCREATEDPREPATCH
option. When this is run on a client workstation, the tool detects
when
KB
931836 (time zone update) was applied to the operating system, and
only
updates items in the affected period that were created before that.

You can also use the /ONLYCREATEDPREPATCH option and specify a UTC
time:http://exchangepedia.com/blog/2007/03/dst-2007-clarification-on-using...

2. Yes, as long as you rebase only appointments created before user
workstations got their KB 931836 time zone update as described above.
Else,
even appointments created with new DST 2007 time zone rules will get
wrongly
rebased, as explained here:

You will find specific statement/illustration in the above post.

If I run this update tool on mailbox, are all appointments within
the
DST
change period affected? We have a situation were some workstations
had
KB928388 installed in Dec - as I understand it, this was a KB931836
predecessor. So, workstations with this update that booked
appointments
after
that should be OK, but not appointments booked prior to that date -
Correct?

The rest of the servers and a few laptops got the update in late
Feb.
Every machine now has KB931836 and there is a mix of appointments
during
the
DST change period that are OK and some that are off by one hour
ahead.
IF I run the Time Zone Update Tool, will all the appointments in
the
DST
change period be pushed back an hour?

I have not been able to find that specific statement or a statement
that
describes which appointments will be changed by the tool.

Hello Bharat,
just to be clear-this option is designed to circumvent moving any
appointments that were created after the KB931836 updated was applied?
What is the impact on recurring appointments, since it is stated it
will only rebase single instance appointments in KB 933146-or are
those automatically adjusted somehow?
Thanks.
