Del, Thank you.
So I need to restore ( 5 hours ).
I can do that.
Can you tell me how I could make absolutely sure I've got the right logs
moved into the RSG directory?

Wow, Tivoli is stupid. Whenever a RSG is present Recovery forces a Dialog.
pop-up stating that only restored logs will be played.
Even when "Run Recovery" check box is unselected I'll receive the Pop-up
stating that the restore will force restored log replay......again Stupid.
However after unselecting "Run Recovery" and checking app logs and for the
restore.env file, doesn't appear Recovery actuall did run...
So I ran eseutill /cc and all logs played into RSG DB including the current
Logs. here's some notes from my steps.
1). Clean up the RSG file location, just to keep this simple.
2). Add the RSG DB 3). copy those current logs to RSG log location
4). Ran DPE restore with "Run Recovery" uncheck'd ...ignore the stupid
pop-up stating only Restored logs will be played.
5). Ran eseutil /cc all logs including current logs played into
RSG DB.

Mounting the store with chk files renamed didn't work.
eseutil /cc didn't work.
eseutil /r /d didn't work.
I'm restoring again.
I told Tivoli not to do recovery.
The GUI complained.
I the log file says it won't.
We'll see.
Try eseutil /cc in the morning.
Hopefully a restore.env will be waiting for me.

OK. I'm gonna copy the RSG directory to another area, delete the chk
point
file and try mounting the store. If I understand correctly, this will
hopefully play the logs in that directory? No ESEUtil /cc needed? Is
there a way to test that the logs are "sequential between the restored
and
current copied logs?"

Well that makes sense to me, If recovering to the RSG you'd
typically do
not have Current Logs, only Logs associated with the Restore set.
Doesnt make sense to me. The beauty of the RSG is that you can
restore
the last full and roll the current, unpurged logs to bring the store
up to date and then swap with the dial tone database. Probably the
only time you dont need the current logs is when you need to recover
an old mailbox backup.
Ok, I agree Dang Tivoli, I gotta test tomorrow.
Trust me if we had a choice it wouldn't be Tivoli.
I guess you could copy any current Logs into the RSG Log location and
allow
them to replay to recover any missing mail. Hmmmm I see your point
now,
DPE won't in the GUI allow any current Logs to play.
Thats just stupid if that is the case. If the software doesnt let you
replay logs in the RSG, its time to dump it and use something like
NTBACKUP or BE. The restore should replay any logs in the RSG
directory as well as the temp directory used for restore.env file.
So you'll need Sequential Logs, between restored and copied current
Logs.
You copied current Logs to the RSG log location correct? Use eseutil
/cc
and
see if the Restore.env plays restored temp location logs then should
play
any current logs. If not, This may work, rename the chk point file
for
that
RSG db and mount the store, that should verify/play through all
available
Logs.
Online restores and hard recoveries ignore the checkpoint file
regardless.
Thanks, Good to know.
Or call PSS.
Right, Don't mount from DPE if you can't also play current Logs.

Also, I have Tivoli Data Protection for Exchange and it will not
let me
"Replay Restored AND Current Logs" when I restore to RSG.
Should I tell it not to "Mount Databases After Restore" then use
ESEUtil
to
replay them?
Any special instructions for ESEUtil since the dbs will be in a
different
directory with different names than when the log files were
created?

Friday afternoon the server died.
Saturday morning I created a dial tone data base and got mail
running.
I restored to recovery storage group.
The restore replayed the logs from the backup.
I did not replay existing logs from bad database.
I swapped databases and merged.
I am up and running.
The mail between the restored db (thurs nite) and the failure
point
(friday
afternoon) is still
in the logs.
Is it too late to replay them?
Can I play them to the dialtone db and remerge?
Yes, you can rerun the restore to the RSG again ( be sure to clear
all
the existing files out of it) and put those trans logs that need
to be
replayed in the RSG directory and restore so they can be
replayed..
After that you can merge all those messages back into the existing
mailboxes into a sep. recovered folder, or maybe a better option
is to
use exmerge after the restore to the RSG is complete and filter on
the
time period you are missing and export based on that filter.
In theory, you can merge the whole thing back into the production
mailboxes and there wont be dups based on message id, but at this
point, you probably do not want to risk that and the exmerge
option
might be the best.
