A client of ours has a sbs server2003 with exchange sp2 The end user deleted an item by performing a soft delete by hitting the x button in the taskpane to removed the item within outlook he then emptied the recycle bin in the outlook, He then realized there was an email there he required. I read a few ms kb;s and its hard to decifer what to do seems that with a soft deletinon i can just go directly into the mailbox store to the users personal mailbox and open it up to recover as the item is no longer visable to him from the recover deleted items property box So we next looked at the settings in the server on the exchange system manager/admin groups/admin group /servers /storage group then mailbox store the mailbox store is set to 30 days retention but when we checked the users directory of when deleted items would be stored it was set to 0 so cuirous does the exchange mailbox store proceed with retention of 30 days or does the users mailbox store take right and delete every item based on 0 days

And if i can proceed to open the mailbox store any information as being the administrator is based soley on exch 5.5 was hoping someone with exchange 2k3 could help

If user had two mailboxes open, then all deleted items from secondary mailbox will go to Deleted Items of primary.
Also if user deleted messages from Deleted Items Retention they are gone for good.
