Hi,
Thank you for taking time to response.
I understand that you want to change the from address as user@xxxxxxxxx,
however you want the email go through your Exchange Server instead of gmail
Server. I want to emphasize Exchange always send email via primary smtp
address, we are unable to send email with customized SMTP address unless
you have multiple accounts on Outlook or Thunderbird client, however you do
not want to send it via gmail account. You may consider the workaround as
below:
1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers console
2. Create a new user with email address
3. Go to the E-mail addresses tab.
4. Uncheck (on the bottom) "Automatically Update e-mail addresses based on
the Recipient Policy".
5. Add the "user@xxxxxxxxx" as the Primary email, do not remove any other
address from here. Ok the changes.
6. Add this account in Thunderbird client, then you are able to send email
with @gmail.com.
Note. As you do not hold @gmail.com in the internet, you are unable to
receive any email to this recipient, all messages will deliver to the real
Gmail account.
Have a nice day!
Best Regards,

| Thank you for answering but it doesn't really help resolve the problem.
I'll
| try to make this clear:
|
| 1. I have a computer system with Thunderbird on it.
|
| 2. With my user ID, I can login and configure Thunderbird as an IMAP
client
| to my Exchange 2003 SP2 system. The outgoing SMTP server is the secure
SMTP
| virtual server described in the original posting. Everything works OK.
|
| 3. I configure a second account in Thunderbird for my gmail account. I
| intentionally configure it incorrectly so that it will not connect to
gmail
| and I never try to access gmail. I just want to use the "From" address.
After
| configuring the second account, I am still able to send mail to my
corporate
| Exchange server with an alternate FROM address (my gmail address). This
works
| fine and I'll demonstrate this by sending you an email if you'd like.
|
| 4. I log off of my Linux system and log in as a test user that I have
named
| cmonster. This is a totally unprivileged user and only belongs to the
Domain
| Users group. I configure Thunderbird as an IMAP client to access email
and
| everything works OK. The SMTP server is the secure virtual server that I
used.
|
| 5. I configure a second account in Thunderbird for my gmail account. Like
| before, I intentionally configure it wrong so that it won't connect. I
try to
| send another email to the Exchange server with a different FROM address
as
| cmonster and I get an error message back from the Exchange server: An
error
| occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.7.3 Client does
not
| have permission to Send As this sender.. Please verify that your email
| address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again."
|
| 6. If I change the properties on the SMTP server so that I authenticate
on
| the Exchange SMTP virtual server with my account rather than cmonster,
then
| it works OK and I can successfully send with an alternative FROM address.
But
| a typical user who just belongs to Domain Users can't.
|
| So the exact same thing fails for the cmonster account that works for my
| account. There is something different somewhere and I need to figure out
what
| it is. This has to do with permissions somewhere but I am not sure where.
|
| Thanks for your help!
