Re: Default SMTP Virtual Server - no outbound mail

- Assuming you tried to telnet from your Exchange server to a smtp host
outside your firewall.
- Did you try this by IP address of the external host?
- If that fails as well, check if outbound smtp (tcp port 25) is
open/allowed on your firewall (from Exchange or internal network to external
network).
- If you just checked by fqdn of remote smtp host and this didn't work, test
this by IP address.
- If that works, and it's now isolated to name resolution (you cannot
resolve internet domains from your Exchange server). Remove the external DNS
server(s) from SMTP virtual server config.
- Can your internal DNS server(s) resolve internet domains? If yes, you do
not need external DNS server(s) configured on your SMTP virtual server.
- If the internal DNS servers cannot resolve internet domains, talk to
whoever takes care of your network connectivity/dns and get IP address(es)
of valid DNS servers in your perimeter network ("dmz") or located at your
service provider and insert these in your SMTP vs config.

Telnet to port 25 is unsuccessful, connection failed, timed out.
something
in exchange or firewall? was working until i changed the external dns
servers! any way to find out what the old entries were? A readable
config
file I could view from backup?
I'm stuck with swelling queues!

telnet to smtp port:
telnet server.domain.com 25
or by ip address:
telnet x.x..x.x 25
before that, make sure name resolution works:
nslookup -querytype=mx somedomain.com
this should give you a list of external smtp hosts to work with.

outside domain pings are successful, how would i test smtp?
Anything to do with propagation? do I need any default servers in
there?

Good day -I'm running Exchange 2003 SP2 and I recently changed the
external
DNS servers in the SMTP protocol properties, (System Manager> Admin
Group
>
First Admin Group > Servers > Default SMTP Virtual Server >
Properties
>
Delivery > Advacnced) and now all outbound mail is stalled. The
queue
is
full of "Retry" for all external domains.
Inbound mail is fine. I failed to record the existing external DNS
servers
because I didn't think it was necessary. The external DNS servers I
entered
are from my ISP where the MX/A/PTR records exist.
Can you assist? Much appreciated.
