Re: Intelligent Mail Filter (Mixed Mode)

IMF needs to be enabled on the SMTP virtual server(s) that receive inbound
internet mail - the internet-facing ones. That's how the SCL gets stamped.
Store thresholds are configured in Global Settings.

I am reading that the Intelligent Mail Filter is not supported in a
clustered
environment. My Gateway server is not clustered but my mailbox servers
are.
Can I still use the Intelligent Mail Filter?

I am running exchange server 2003 SP2

Gateway threshold is intended to drop (or archive or reject) messages at
the
Gateway - this is the first Exchange Server 2003 server that receives
internet mail and stamps a SCL on it.

Once the "gateway" drops/rejects/archives all messages meeting/exceeding
gateway threshold, the remaining messages are sent to the user's Store
for
delivery. Here, the Store threshold comes into play - it is intended to
move
messages meeting/exceed this threshold to user's Junk Mail folder.

Store threasholds?

Where do you configure that?

Gateway threshold = 8, Store threshold = 5 seems to work (across may
deployments), with Store threshold raised to 6 at times.

Thank you for all the info. It was very helpful.

What do you use for your SCL ratings.

"Bharat Suneja [MVP]" wrote:

No... not necessarily Front-Ends. FEs, if they're running SMTP, may
or
may
not receive SMTP mail.

Inbound SMTP mail is received by the server(s) that the MX
record(s)
in
your
external DNS zone point to. If these are your FEs, they should
receive
inbound internet mail and can be said to be your gateway servers.
Else,
the
MX could point to Bridgehead servers (SMTP virtual servers that
serve
as
Bridgeheads for Connectors), mailbox servers, or non-Exchange SMTP
hosts
which in turn forward the inbound mail to Exchange server(s).

When microsoft refers to gateway servers, are they talking about
the
Front-ends?

"Bharat Suneja [MVP]" wrote:

No you don't. Check SMTP virtual server properties \ General tab

(next to IP address) | select IP address | Edit. You should see
the

All I see is MSCFV2. I am pretty sure we have never installed
V1.

Do we need to me in Native Mode?

Did you ever install IMF v1? If yes, uninstall it first. Not

if
it's
installed? Check \exchsrvr\bin folder - do you see MSCFV1

If
yes, you still have IMFv1 installed. If you don't see it in
Add/Remove
Programs, you will need to reinstall IMFv1, then uninstall
it,
and
apply
Exchange Server 2003 SP2 which includes IMF v2.
