Gateway threshold = 8, Store threshold = 5 seems to work (across may
deployments), with Store threshold raised to 6 at times.

Thank you for all the info. It was very helpful.
What do you use for your SCL ratings.

No... not necessarily Front-Ends. FEs, if they're running SMTP, may or
may
not receive SMTP mail.
Inbound SMTP mail is received by the server(s) that the MX record(s) in
your
external DNS zone point to. If these are your FEs, they should receive
inbound internet mail and can be said to be your gateway servers. Else,
the
MX could point to Bridgehead servers (SMTP virtual servers that serve as
Bridgeheads for Connectors), mailbox servers, or non-Exchange SMTP hosts
which in turn forward the inbound mail to Exchange server(s).

When microsoft refers to gateway servers, are they talking about the
Front-ends?
"Bharat Suneja [MVP]" wrote:
No you don't. Check SMTP virtual server properties \ General tab |
Advanced
(next to IP address) | select IP address | Edit. You should see the
checkboxes for all filters, including IMF v2.

All I see is MSCFV2. I am pretty sure we have never installed V1.
Do we need to me in Native Mode?

Did you ever install IMF v1? If yes, uninstall it first. Not sure
if
it's
installed? Check \exchsrvr\bin folder - do you see MSCFV1 folder in
it?
If
yes, you still have IMFv1 installed. If you don't see it in
Add/Remove
Programs, you will need to reinstall IMFv1, then uninstall it, and
apply
Exchange Server 2003 SP2 which includes IMF v2.
