The Advanced/Enterprise versions of Windows server support the /3Gb switch
that can be used when you have more than 1 Gb RAM - but this is not an
option with Standard Edition.

There's no issue with applying the hotfix, afaik. Hotfixes do typically
replace a few files with a later version. As long as you have the required
version mentioned in the hotfix kba (for instance, some require a particular
Exchange service pack like SP2), you're good. That particular hotfix (kb
883527) requires Exchange 2000 SP3.

As with all hotfixes, it makes sense to install on a test box first.

Greetings,

Last week I have installed 4GB of RAM on my Exchange server. I run Windows
2000 Server standard SP4 and Exchange 2000 SP3. Ever since I have added
the
new memory, I keep getting warnings about Event ID 9582 stating that
Virtual
Memory is fragmented in such a way that normal operations can fail.
Restart
all Exchange services

Event type: Warning
Event source: Microsoft Exchange IS
Event category: Performance
Event ID: 9582
Description: The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is
fragmented in such a way that performance may be affected. It is highly
recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this issue.

These events keep appearing once every hour in my Event viewer log.

Microsoft states according to KB883527 that there is a hotfix available. I
called MS and they sent me the hotfix but I have not applied it yet. Any
other related expriences with this? Will the aformentioned hotfix will
resolve my issues?

My store.exe and mdbmsg.dll are both 6.0.6603.0 and the ones provided with
the hotfix are 6.0.6617.6 so it could be an issue. I hope I wont need to
remove the RAM and go back to 1GB as before. Thanks for sharing your
similar
experiences.

Thierry
