Re: SMTP Authentication

You're sure that you don't have any SMTP host between the Internet and your
Exchange server? That is, if you telnet to port 25 from the Internet do you
see an Exchange server banner? Maybe you have a firewall that does
inspection and relay.

Post your e-mail domain and I'll be happy to look at it for you.

I am aware of the SMTP authentication requirements in Outlook. I think what
needs to be addressed from my original post is why Outlook relay works
inside
the domain and not outside the domain. Any user who authenticated should
be
able to relay. Also related is not being able to telnet to port 25 outide
the
domain (but within the same subnet). If the credentials I enter are being
accepted by POP3, shouldn't they work for SMTP as well?

Thank you.

Are they authenticating using the following format?
DOMAIN\User_ID\Mailbox_Alias

If Mailbox_Alias = User_ID, then the format can be the following:

DOMAIN\User_ID

Not only do they have to authenticate to the POP server, they have to
authenticate to the SMTP server. Make sure that's configured in the
Outlook
profile.

I'm testing using an Outlook 2003 POP3 client, entering the domain
credentials for username and password.

This is regarding an Exchange 2003 SP2 server on Windows 2003 SP1.

The issue I am having is not being able to relay through the SMTP
Virtual
Server from a device that is not a Domain member. The SMTP VS has
the
default
properties, where Relay is restricted, but all authenticated users
should
be
able to relay.

From inside the domain, I am able to relay and am able to telnet to
port
25
of the Exchange server.

From outside the domain (but within the same LAN subnet), I am
unable
to
do
either. A telnet attempt will fail (although I can telnet to port
110),
and a
POP3 accout using Outlook will fails when attempting to send a
message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
