Re: Moving Mailboxes Exchange 2003 Enterprise

Tod,

Thanks for the tip on the BES, we do use BES for our Blackberries. DO
you have to physically restart the BES server or have you tried
stopping and restarting the BES services?

I would still notify them in groups of the move just to set the expectation.
I've had users
who have left their outlook open during a move and they just needed to close
outlook and
restart (message are queued during the move and then delivered to the new
location).

The only other thing we occasionally run in to is if the users has a
Blackberry. The BES
server for some reason likes to be restarted after a move as it sometimes
loses connection
with the mailbox (but not all the time). We just schedule it to restart
after the moves.

Also, be sure to watch your log creation on the destination server so you
don't run out of
space on your log volume since moves generate alot of logs.

We have installed three new Exchange 2003 Enterprise Servers to replace
our current overworked Exchange 2003 Enterprise Server and at this
point I'm ready to start moving mailboxes but have a few questions
about the process.

1. I'd like to make this as transparent to the end-user as possible so
the plan is to not tell the users that I will be moving their mailbox.
Is there a way to close an Outlook client session for the users I will
be moving? Even if tell them to close Outlook they will forget and
leave it open.

3. What happens if I move a users mailbox while their outlook client is
open and connected to the exchange server?

2. All the servers will be in the same site and admin group. Besides
Using the Move Mailbox Wizard and scheduling the mailbox move over the
weekend is there anything I need to worry about. I've already moved
four or five test mailboxes and everything has worked perfectly well.

3. The plan is to move my mailbox first and test for awhile before I
start moving users.

Thanks,

Javier
