Well, after four days of struggling with this problem, here are some of the
steps that may or may not solve it in the event it happens to you.
1 - Boot into safe mode, Local Admin
2 - Disable the ups service and any APC servers and clients you may have.
3 - Stop any Backup Exec services - Stop McAfee/Network Associates
4 - Download Registry Cleaner. APC software literally a thousand shared
dll's into your registry.
5 - Call APC and ask them to send you the document on how to manually remove
dll's- verify that they are gone.
6 - Disjoin the domain and log in as local admin
7 - install Reg cleaner and clean registry - ****backup the reg first*****
**** Reg clean may detect the exchange.edb file as one to be deleted -
Don't!******
Look through the list of files that are going to be deleted by the cleaner.
8 - uninstall if possible any APC/Backup/McAfee programs
9 - Re-boot into safe mode
10 - Log into the domain, in safe mode
11 - reboot
It will take a bit of time, but your connection should be restablished. I
also deleted the Exchange server from the domain before I re-joined the
domain, but deleting the account may not be necessary.
I have no idea whether McAfee or Backup Exec contributed to this problem, or
whether the latest patch dated 9/27 caused the disjoin. All I can do now is
add back services until I determine what may have caused the problem. APC is
out though; too many registry entries, to much trouble.
