Hello,

I am working on an Exchange server with issues. I have gained access to the log files and at first glance (tho the logs aren't exactly comprehensible), it would appear that the Exchange server is relaying SPAM.

I am hoping somebody would care to explain to me the way in which an Exchange server operates, what are it's mechanisms to not be an open relay and basically how do I make sense of these logs.

If a sender and the subject of his email is represented in the log, does that mean the server has sent that email?

Many SPAM emails in the logs are undeliverable, does the Exchange server forward them back trough the originating SMTP server, or do they end up with the unsuspecting user who's e-mail address SPAMmers have used in the "FROM" field?

Thank you for your help.
