Re: SMTP, X400... routing no worky

Hi Matt,

What is the error code in the ndr? It will be a 5.X.X number. This will help us to determine why the message is failing to be delivered.

Some things to check / keep in mind.

1) You should not have ANY MX records in your internal DNS for domains that you receive email for. If you do this will cause Exchange to have fits.
2) On sending the external mail simply looking at the queues in queue viewer should provide you with more information at the bottom that should let you know why we are not sending the mail. Most likely we are either unable to resolve the MX record from DNS for the domain we are sending too ... or we are not allowed to connect to its IP.

You can test this by using Nslookup From the Exchange server to verify you can find the MX record for "yahoo.com" then try telneting on port 25 to that IP.

Hope this Helps,

I have w2k3 server with Exchange 2003 and whenever I send a message I
get a 290 NDR message from the x400 protocol. The basic layout is:

Edomainname.com - ISP hosted email and webdomain, also the domain name
of the PDC and internal domain. MX records for this domain point to
the ISPs mail servers.

INTdomainname.com - internally hosted email system on the
Edomainname.com servers. ISP DNS has its MX records to our Natted
external IP. Port 25 forwarded (do I need another?)

SMTP connectors are configured and running... using DNS, not smarthost.
Don't seem to actually connect anything.

I can see no reason for x400 to be running... yet everytime I send an
email out to an INTdomainname.com email address I get a 290 NDR from
x400.

When I send an email to @yahoo.com I get no bounce, the mail doesn't go
through... I see a yahoo.com in the queues for a bit, nothing in the
mailroot directories. No event for it.

When I send to user@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx from yahoo.com I get no email, no
bounce no event.

I can telnet into the mail.INTdomainname.com and send mail that never
goes anywhere from both internal and external machines.

Any ideas? I am trying to get this working of course, and have run in
circles trying to find out if there is something I am missing or if
this configuration is not supported? Is there some DNS setting in our
local domain that needs to refelct the INTdomainname.com?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... I'm new to Exchange so forgive
any over/under explainations.

Matt
