By default, IMAP communication is sent "in the clear" over port 143. If
you are using Integrated Windows Authentication, the password is not sent,
but if you use Basic Authentication (with non-Microsoft clients) then the
username and password is in clear text. You must get a certificate for your
server and enable SSL. You can use the same cert that you use for OWA,
provided it is on the same machine. When users configure the FQDN server
name, they should use the same FQDN that they use for OWA.

Hello,
I have to enable IMAP on my Exchange box for a variety of reasons and
have
a quesiton: is all IMAP traffic sent in the clear? Especially here I'm
referring to credentials. If so, is it simply a matter of putting an SSL
cert on the IMAP protocol to enable some sort of encryption or is it more
detailed? I have a cert I use for OWA, could that be used to secure IMAP?
If not, how can it be done? Or does it need to be done?
Thanks for any reply!
