- Can you connect to smtp port from inside? From multiple hosts? If yes,
SMTP works ok.
- If you can't connect from outside over SMTP, but can connect to OWA
(http/s), check the access rules on your firewall, is it allowing smtp?
- Check your SMTP virtual server | access tab | Connection - are you
blocking smtp connectivity from all IPs except the ones in that list (is
"Only the list below" checked)?

Bharat,
thanks for the excellent info-
on another note- my outgoing mail is working fine (sending from my
exchange
server)
but as of today- no incoming emai. My mx records are fine, i checked in my
router and the ip maps are look good.
everything was working fine yesterday other than someone using our server
to
mail relay.
i can open up outlook web access from outside the office so i know the ip
maps are working. when i try to telnet from outside - back into our
exchange
server -
i get nothing- cursor just blinks instead of connecting.
what steps can i take to see why email is not coming in to the server-
even
though i can connect into the outlook web access from outside the office?
thanks again.

Exchange Server 2003 does not allow unauthenticated relaying out of the
box.
You can create an additional SMTP virtual server for outbound internet
email, so it only accepts anonymous/unauthenticated connections and
isn't
exposed to password harvesting attacks as explained in this doc:
Configuring Exchange SMTP Gateways at Microsoft

Good day,
running 2003 exchange- standard edition and want to "lock" down my
exchange
server so we don't get hit by someone using our server as a mail relay
host.
we use pix firewall and have this configured properly but are there
recommended settings that should be configured on the exchange
servers'
SMTP
properties too.
thanks.
