Re: Public Folders EXC 2003

Hi DavidK,

With OWA if you go to the following link you can view the public folders on a specific server:

http://servername/exchange/public

That will connect you directly to the Public folder store on the server.

If your environment is only the one cluster server and a FE server then you should only have one Public folder store in the entire organization. With an A/A cluster you should only have one public folder store for the whole cluster, then we should not have a Public folder store on the FE server.

Now assuming you were having this problem back when there was only one store in the org ... the message should have been getting stuck in a queue or generating an NDR.

When you go back to one public folder store please let us know what the behavior is. Or if my assumption that you have only the One Cluster + FE is incorrect also let me know.

Hope this Helps,

Thanks Matthew, I only had the PF's on Node1 of the cluster to start with. I
only created a replica on the FE to see if that was the problem of why I
couldn't send to the PF's from Node2. Actually that was the only other server
I had with exchange to try. I actually changed the Node2 store to look at the
FE and that resulted in people on Node2 not being able to see PF's at all. So
I changed the store back to look at Node1 for the PF's. I don't like them on
the FE either. I am going to try your other suggestion of testing...
you can confirm that is the case by connecting to each of the Replicas of
the public folder in question using OWA pointed directly to the servers in
question.
... not sure what you mean here. Use OWA pointing to Node2, a mailbox on
Node2? and see if I can see the PF's. or something else. If I have a
replication issue, can you give me some direction, I haven't messed with PF's
for a while, but when I set up the Cluster, I remember some gotcha's... It
looks like the PF's are replicated but I have another problem, at least I
think, when I go to the properties of the PF from inside the System Manager,
I cannot get in to the Client permissions from there. ?? any suggestions, and
could this be a part of the problem.

Hi DavidK,

You should not be running a public folder store on your Front End server.
Especially not one that has replicas. Add a replica of the public folder in
question to the Public folder store associated with Node 1 of the cluster.
(If one is already there skip this step)

Then remove the replica from the Front End server ( if just adding it to
Node 1 wait a bit for PF repl to happen). Once you only have a replica on
the Node 1 Store repeat the test and see what happens. I am willing to be
that this will resolve your issue.

Oh ... and most likely what you have happening is a public folder
replication issue ... you can confirm that is the case by connecting to each
of the Replicas of the public folder in question using OWA pointed directly
to the servers in question.

Little more information:
When sending from Node 1 ... Node 1 has a PF store and will deliver the mail
directly to the PF store on Node 1 ... since Node 1 has a replica it will
drop into the folder there.
When sending from Node 2 ... there is not a local PF store so we have to go
thru the lookup process to determine what store to send the mail to. This
process results in an answer of the FE server. So we send the mail there.
There FE server has a replica so the mail is deliver locally.

Now if that is the case and PF replication is not working from the FE server
to the Node 1 server (and the clients are only looking at the pf store on
the node 1 server) then .... you will get the behavior that you see.

Easy way to solve this as stated before ... get the Pub off of your FE
server. Microsoft generally does not recommend running a public folder
store on the FE server but if you have to for PF mailflow it is best that
the Pub not contain any replicas.

Hope this Helps,
