Close, but not quite. Forms-based authentication would depend on the
browser version, not the OS version (for the most part).
Have you checked the default domain settings on the exchange virtual
directories of both the FE and BE server? I'd make sure they are set to the
NetBIOS domain name on both, and see if that takes care of it.

Do you have forms-based authentication enabled? The following is an
excerpt
from KB article # 903942:
To configure Exchange Server 2003 so that users can log on to Outlook Web
Access without a domain name, the following conditions must be true:. The
Microsoft Exchange server must be running Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Service Pack 1 (SP1).
. If Windows Server 2003 SP1 is not installed, you must have the hotfix
that
is in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article installed on the
Exchange server.
827991 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827991/) "HTTP error 401.1 -
Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials" error message
if
the Basic
. The Exchange virtual directory must be configured to accept only Basic
Authentication.
It would stand to reason that if Forms-based authentication were enabled
that the Windows XP clients would be attempting to use that since it is
more
secure than basic. Windows 2000 clients don't unserstand Forms-based
authentication so they would only attempt to use Basic.
That's my best guess.

Here's the scenerio:
Exchange 2003 FE/BE setup. Clients are a mix of Windows 2000 and XP OS
using OWA. Users log into the domain on the PC with a user ID. They
open IE and type in the alias to get to OWA. The authentication screen
comes up where they log into OWA with a different ID. On XP machines
they put in 'username' and 'password', and get an error screen. It
wants 'domain/userusername'. On W2K machines it works fine with just
the username and password without typing in the domain.
The only difference is the OS. They are all accessing the same
exchange server. They are all in the same administrative group. They
are all using computers that are already logged into the domain.
Any clues?
.
