Re: External interface on Exchange 2003

On my present server (W2k with E2k3) I have 2 interfaces. One is used for the
internal connections and the other one is external which has access to the
internet through the router.
I have another box (W2k3) where I want to install another copy of E2k3 and
move everything over to the new server. Once everything is moved over I will
be getting rid of W2k box. From what I understand the router that is hooked
up to the external interface is forwarding everything to the W2k box (I
didn't set it up so I had to ask another person).
Once I install the second exchange, I will:
- replicate all public folders to new server
- rehome the offline address book folder
- change the server that is responsible for generating the offline address
list
- rehome the schedule + free busy folder
- rehome the organization forums folder
- rehome RUS
- Designate another server to be the routing group MASTER (this is what I
meant by master server)
- create another SRS instance
- rehome connectors
- move mailboxes (I have just over 400 of them and some are close to 1 GB)
- and finally remove the old exchange server after letting it run for about
a month just in case
My question was at which point in this procedure I should setup external
interface on my new exchange server. I thought that I have to do it right
after I assign a new routing group MASTER, but I am not sure and afraid to
risk doing it unless I can get some feedback.
Is there a definite answer or it doesn't matter at which point I deal with
external interface?
Thank you for your help

Somehow your plan does not seem right - first of all routers do not.
route e-mail through Exchange(reverse happens Exchange - uses router to
access Internet). Secondly I am not sure what do you mean by saying
"Master".
You can move Exchange data by following

I am moving my exchange 2003 to the new hardware.
My present Exchange box has external interface setup so that D-Link router
can route emails to it. When I install the new server, do I need to
setup an external interface or can I do all the data transfer and setup the
External interface just before I make it a Master? I am not sure how much can
I do just having an internal interface on the new server. I realize that
sooner or later I will need to move the external interface to the new server,
but I am not sure at which point should that be done.
Thank you in advance.
