Re: Cannot Move Mailboxes - RESOLVED

I'm glad you got it resolved.

Jeff -

Resolved the issue. I supected either something was stuck in the registry on
the E2K3 box ir perhaps it's account in AD was corrupt. I wound up removing
it from the domain, re-running forest prep and domain prep and re-joining
the domain. After a little tweaking, I'm moving mailboxes and the event log
is clean. Thanks for your input and interest in this thread.

One thing I just noticed and I am not 100% sure this is an issue but
...when
running forest and domain prep, the only items in the setup that are
checked
for prep is Microsoft Exchange....none of the sub-items are selected nor
will it allow you to select them. I am referring to the messaging and
collaboration and the rest of the items. I cannot recall whether these
were
all selected in my lab work. Does anyone recall whether all of the items
are
selected during forest prep?

Thanks

Yeah I did and I also went through the install logs line by line....and
it
indicates Forest ran correctly. My mail enabled users also have exchagne
attributes. As I though about this, I don;t think E2K3 will install with
forest prep being run successfuly.

At any rate, earlier in this thread, someone posted a utility from
priasoft that handles the moves. I downloaded an eval and it worked
fine....so it is definately something in the config. This software is too
pricey to consider so I need to resolve this.

I have gone through everything that I have found on MS KB and could
Google
up and I'm still stuck. It definately appears to be a permissions error
somehwere I suspect but don't know where. I've gone down to file level
access on the DB to ensure that the admin's account that is running the
mailbox wizard has permissions.

Thanks for all the time you've spent on this and am still open to
suggestions.

The forestprep process extends the AD schema to include all the Exchange
attributes. It run very fast if it's already been done.

If you can see the msExch* attributes in ADSIEdit or see the mailbox
tabs
for mailbox enabled users in AD, then forestprep ran successfully.
ADPrep
adds the Exchange security principles to the AD domain, such as Exchange
Enterprise Servers and Exchange Domain Servers. Please doublecheck that
these exist. Did you run setup /domainprep again?

Just ran it again. Same deal...1 minute and it was completed. I ran it
with
a Schema Admins account. Is there anywhere that I can look to determine
what
is happening and why this isn't running correctly? I guess my next
question
would be...if this cannot be successfully then what, roll back to 4.0
and
start all over again......hopefully not the case.

No, I was affraid that this may have been the issue. This was the
first
time run and I don't know why it would've not run correctly. Would I
have
to re-run exchange install also

Yeah, a typical time for ForestPrep is about 9-10 minutes. You
should be
able to safely run setup /forestprep and setup /domainprep again
without
issues to see if it clears up. Make sure to use the schema admin
account.

If the forestprep ran successfully, you'll see the msExch*
attributes
for
each mailbox enabled user using ADSIEdit. You'll also see the
Exchange
tabs
for users in ADUC on a machine that has ESM installed.

Did anyone maybe do a forestprep earlier? Maybe for Exchange 2000?

The reason I brought this up was this. During the first
installation
of
Exchange 2003, it failed. What I did to correct the problem was the
5.5
service account needed additional permissions and the second
install
went
fine.

I had one initial concern in the ForestPrep took a considerable
longer
amount of time to run when we were working on this in our Lab than
it
did
when we ran it live on our network. Completed in under a minute but
reported
no errors. AD also looks healthy so I'm really puzzled as to what
can be
causing this issue.

All E2K3 services run under the local system account.

I'm sorry...I mean the exchange services.

? There is no service account for Exchange 2003.

Thanks. My Exchange Domain Servers group has my admin

my

My
Exchange 2003 service acct is running under local system.
Could
this
be
an
issue....the 5.5 is running under a specified account.

I had the same prob and used a 3rd party tool to do the
moves.
www.priasoft.com. Also, check the permissions on the
Exchange
Domain
Servers Group. When they get hosed it can cause this issue.
