I'll call concentric tomorrow to look into it (they had a voice message). As
for reproducing the behavior, I could reproduce it. However, here's
something interesting:
*Location has all the external contacts in the list, including the
southlandtransit.com address. Every time I email this list, I get the
invalid domain error from southlandtransit.com.
*Suspension has internal and a few external contacts, but doesn't include
the southlandtransit.com. I get no errors back. If I add the
southlandtransit.com to the *suspension list, I get the error.
If anyone else emails either of the list, they get errors back from
sgtransit.com. I never get errors back from that domain.
If I hear back from concentric, I'll post the reply about what they said.
Thanks for your time.

I've never heard of such a convoluted practice of "rotating" MX records,.
though unless the only servers that accept mail for that domain are the
"current" list of servers, it shouldn't necessarily cause problems. I'd go
back to concentric at this point and ask what happens if you transfer the
message to a server that isn't listed in their "current" mx list. The
reason I say that is that your dns server is going to cache the records for
southlandtransit.com for a period of time. If you are sending to one of the
"cached" MX servers, but concentric has already changed the list, and is
doing something else funky, then it would cause problems (such as invalid
domain).
I see that the other domain is also hosted by concentric. Can you always
reproduce this same behavior, where both contacts fail for all users, and
always succeeds for you?
Can you try and delete and re-create the contact?
I'd also look at your DNS setup and see if you are set up to use forwarders
or root hints. The e-mail addresses sound fine. That's how they should be
set up. They will get stamped with internal adddresses (smtp and x400) by
the recipient update service.

Thanks for the info. Here is what I got from the Message Tracking Center
for
that one NDR for the southlandtransit.com address:
4/12/2006 3:03 PM SMTP: Non-Deliveryed Report (NDR) generated
4/12/2006 3:03 PM Message transferred to iphigenia.concentric.com through
SMTP
I received the invalid domain error from this email address. I guess
concentric is hosting the southlandtransit.com MX records. When I did the
dns lookup for southlandtransit.com, the MX constantly change from
iphigenia.concentric.com to another *.concentric.com. I asked concentric
about this and they said they always rotate the names.
As for the permissions, I have not set any restrictions. Another tech
check
that out too and didn't find any restrictions. The primary SMTP email
address is username@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx We do have an internal SMTP and
x400 for those email address too, but the internal SMTP is not set to be
the
primary address.
Hope that answers your questions.

Track the message from the Message Tracking Center. It should show the
DL
getting expanded and the message getting delivered to each member. For
contacts, it should show the message being handed off to the destination
smtp server. If you have multiple servers, you'll see an additional line
for each server with users on it that is a member of the DL.
If that doesn't provide enough information, then I'd suggest to enable
smtp
logging and see if your server is even opening an outbound connection to
the
recipient's domain.
Have you set any restrictions on who can send to these contacts? Also,
when
you look at the contacts e-mail addresses tab, which addresses show up
there? Which one is set to the primary address?

1. When someone from the inside of the company sends to a distribution
list
on the GAL. The list contains external contacts from the AD. The
issue
has
been with two provider email addresses (sgtransit.com and
southlandtransit.com).
We have a list for suspensions and location eval. LocEval list has
internal
and external contact addresses. If a user on the inside emails the
list,
they get the invalid domain error back from both addresses. If I email
the
list, I only get the error back from southlandtransit.com.
Can you clarify what you mean by track a message sent to the DL?
Thanks,
Ngan

Define what "when someone e-mails" means. Does that mean someone
outside

your company? Internal users?
What do you see when you track a message one of these users sends to
the

I have set up external addresses as Contacts (for example zz Dawn) in
my
Exchange 2003. We have reverse DNS set up for our exchange server.
Those
contacts are part of a couple of distribution lists. When someone
emails
one
of the lists, we get a error msg back from three of the contacts,
all
from
the same domain:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

recipient's
email server. Please contact your system administrator.

If I try to email the list, I do not get those errors.
The 10 MX record is our exchange server and for 20 MX record, it's
our
ISP.
Why is this happening for some of my users, but not for me when I
try
it?
