Re: Exchange 2003 restore /disasterrecovery is asking for existing 5.5 installation password?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

See my other post. I'd concentrate on cleaning up 5.5 first, then work on a
restore procedure. If you are wanting to restore your entire AD as well
(usually isn't necessary), then you'll need to do /disasterrecovery. If you
don't have to restore AD, then just build a new forest.

Ok,

Just tried setting up the server WITHOUT using the /disasterrecovery
switch. Now I get a different error. It doesnt like the fact that it
knows about this server already in AD.

Error is as follows:

Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard
The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services"
cannot be assigned the action "install" because:

- A server object for this server ("EXCHSRV01") already exists in the
administrative group "xxxxxxxxxx". If you are attempting to recover this
server please run setup with the "disasterrecovery" switch otherwise you
must first remove this server object from Active Directory by using the
Exchange System Manager.

I tried deleting the server from ADSI edit with access denied as a result.

Cheers,

MJW.

Hi all,

We are currently doing some disaster recovery testing where I am
attempting
to restore a backup of our exchange 2003 server from tape to a server of
different hardware.

This is in a lab right?

Now when I run the exchange 2003 /disasterrecovery I get the following
error:

Service Account
Assign Service Account Information

The Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services component
requires a user name, domain and password for the existing Exchange 5.5
installation Service Account. Type the information in the fields below.

Now originally the username field had ExchAdmin in it, but now, after I
did
a bit of editing in ADSI edit and changing some exchange fields to <not
set>, the fields are BLANK, and its asking for a password!!!

It seems as thought our old decommisioned 5.5 installation somehow still
remains somewhere in Active Directory even though it was taken out of
services many months ago.

Can anyone shed any light on what I should tweak to get this old 5.5
legacy
out of Active Directory so I can get on with the work of trying to
restore
our server!??

Kind regards,

MJW.

If you are in a lab, no need to install with the disasterrecovery
switch.

Is your production Exchange org in native mode?
