This is a strange one. I had employee who set up outlook 2003 on his
desktop recently and when he connected to the exchange server, a pop up
message asked if he wanted to use the rules on the server or client. I
am not sure which one he selected, however, as he was doing this, he
watched about 2 months of e-mail disappear from his inbox. I am not
sure if he kept outlook open or shut it down at this point. I asked
him for his password and I logged into a test machine here at corp. I
used uncached mode, got the same pop up message regarding the
client/server rules, then watched one month of e-mails disappear before
I closed outlook. I then changed outlook to use cached mode and this
time nothing disappeared. After the local sync was finished I tried
searching for e-mails for the this month, or last month in the advanced
find. And I can't find any of his missing e-mails. I opened up owa on
the exchange server and the exact same e-mails are gone. No view
issues. These e-mail are not in the deleted items. They are vaporized
and I would like to know how/where/what not to do in the future.
Any comments or advice is greatly appreciated.
Michael
Probably delivered to pst.
Enable DumpsterAlwasyOn on the workstation and look in the deleted
items folder under the inbox
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886205
If you are still within the Deleted Item Retention window they should
be there.
Check the delivery point on his mailbox, make sure its set to mailbox
and not personal folder.
That pop-up about rules is because two different versions of Outlook
accessed the mailbox.
