Re: Very Newbie Question

Neil

to use ) and also telnet smpt.gmail.com 25

neither of these connect, I didn't know the hotmail server address

Your recipient policy in Exchange has been set up to generate SMTP
addresses
in the format of name@xxxxxxxxxxx Obviously you couldn't reply to that
from
the Hotmail account. As a test from the Exchange server, drop to a
command
prompt and see if you can do an nslookup or telnet to a remote mail server
on port 25.

Neil thank you for your swift response

As far as I know I have not set up any SMTP connectors for my system. I
intended only to allow internal email. I have checked and I have no
Connectors

anoyher thing I find quite strange is that when I check the email in
Hotmail
it says the source is munday.d@xxxxxxxxxx I didn't think .local would be
allowed onto the Internet

Clearly the Exchange server can communicate outside of your network.
How
it
does that depends on the configuration, i.e. is there an SMTP Connector
forwarding mail to a different SMTP smart host, such as an AV and
content
scanner? You'll need to look for this in Exchange System Manager. Or
perhaps the Exchange server itself is allowed through the firewall on
port
25 SMTP (and obviously DNS et al).

Hi Imust start by admitting I am not very experienced in the world of
Outlook and Exchange but something I find very starnge happens on my
network.

Client Outlook 2002 Server Excgange 2003 with latest service pack

I have set up an internal exchange system whereby the client has only
an
exchange account. Although the client does have internet access

On this client I can email out to; for example hotmail and Gmail
succesfully
although there are NO external accounts configured

I am impressed and yet concerened

Is this supposed to happen and how does it work

thanks for your time

Dave
