Let's have a little more about the infrastructure please. Is there a
DMZ involved? can you actually resolve the host name from the FE to
the BE and can you telnet to tcp 25. That kind of diagnostics would
be helpful.

No DMZ, both the FES & BES are within the Domain.

Host names resolve correctly via nslookup for both servers on both
servers. Both servers can ping each other by name & IP.
I can telnet to the FES & BES on port 25, and manually create a
message.
