It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with how the data is exported. It has
everything to do with the format of the PST file, and what creates it.
Exchange doesn't create the PST file - the software that is doing the
exporting creates it. Legato, in this case.

If your backup software has to export everything in a mailbox to a PST file
before backing it up, you ought to be looking at another backup product.
That is just kludgy!

Pre-Outlook 2003 (and Exmerge) use an ANSI PST format, which is limited to
2GB in size.

As others have stated, Outlook 2003 introduced the ability to create Unicode
PST format files, which are not subject to that same 2GB limit. Unicode PST
files can be much larger. IIRC, the limit for a Unicode PST file is 20GB
(at least by default).
