You only get a copy of the NDR because you accept messages for
addresses that don't exist. If you refused to accept messages like
that you'd never get a copy of an undelivereable message unless it was
for some other reason than "Unknown recipient".

No. I'm saying that 1) you shouldn't turn those DSN's off, and 2) you
shouldn't accept mail you can't deliver.

That would depend on what you used to send the message and the server
to which you sent it.

If you use a MAPI/RPC client like Outlook you'd get a NDR.

If you use a SMTP client like Outlook Express you'd get an error, but
no NDR.

The MAPI/RPC client doesn't use the same mechanism as a SMTP client to
send mail, so let's not talk about them at all.

Within your own organization, NDR's are still sent.

That's because you have the *sending* of NDR's turned off. The
*generation* of NDR's still takes place.
