Migration Problem - Exchange 5.5 to 2003

I was recently brought into a shop that wants to migrate from Windows
NT/Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. They have several NT servers in a domain,
and several Windows 2003 servers with AD. They are running Exchange 5.5.
They have a 2 way trust between the 2 domains. There are about 180 users on
Exchange, some login to the old NT domain, some login to the new AD. I began
the migration process by installing a new Windows 2003 SP1 server, applying
all of the patches. I then proceeded to follow the migration process using
the migration tool (first 2003 server into a 5.5 environment). Everything
was running clean including the installation and execution of the Active
Directory Connector. After all of the replication was completed, I had a new
OU in the AD with all of the Exchange users that did not have accounts in
the 2003 AD replicated as disabled users, as well as some distribution lists
and email contacts. So far, so good. My problem began when I proceeded with
the Exchange Enterprise 2003 installation. My first problem was an error
message immediately that said that this version of Exchange was not
compatible with the version of Windows. I continued the process (planning on
installing Exchange SP1 and SP2 before going into production and hoping that
the incompatibility would go away). The installation proceeded normally, but
then hung up at the installation of Site Replication Services. Although the
installation continued, when it completed I had an error that said that the
Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services were not properly
installed. The error code that I received (0XC1030B11) took me to a
knowledge base article (901052) that described my problem perfectly. It
indicated that there was an incorrect password entered for the "other" side
(the old NT Exchange 5.5 system). In the Exchange installation log, it
appears that the process is trying to insert the new 2003 Exchange server
into the existing 5.5 site, but it is encountering a problem. I followed the
instructions to change the password (which was the same userid/password that
I had used in the migration) and uninstalled and then reinstalled. The
installation hung up at the same place, and now I'm stuck and don't know how
to proceed.

Any ideas??
