Prblm: GAL and child domain, basically two different GALs. Wants shared GAL.

Dear subscribers

I have just configured two Exchange servers in a customer's network. The
network topology consists of one main domain and one child domain, let's
call them school.com and students.school.com. I have installed one Exchange
Server in each domain, i.e. s1.school.com and s2.students.school.com. Both
these servers are also Global Catalog servers but that a different story.

The idea is to have s1 serving the users in the top domain (school.com) and
s2 serving the users in the child domain (students.school.com). My problem
is that the Global Address List (GAL) doesn't contain all users in the whole
domain i.e. if I'm viewing the GAL from a user account in the school.com
domain I only see recipients/mailboxes for other users in school.com and
none from the students.school.com domain and vice versa. I.e. basically I
have two separate GALs, one for each domain, which is not very global.

I figure that it might have something to do with the Recipient Update
Service (RUS) but I'm not sure exactly how this service is supposed to be
configured. Currently the following RUS services are configured (the
configuration looks the same in the Exchange System Manager (ESM) on both
servers):

Name | Domain | Domain Controller | Exchange Server
Recipient Update Service (Enterprise Configuration) | school.com |
s1.school.com| s1
Recipient Update Service (SCHOOL) | school.com | s1.school.com| s1
Recipient Update Service (STUDSCHOOL) | student.school.com | s2.school.com|
s2

I.e. three RUS services total, which are the RUSes created by default during
install. Do I need to configure some kind of cross domain replication RUS in
order to create a GAL that contains all users from both school.com and
student.school.com? I.e I want the user in both school.com and
students.school.com to share a common GAL containing ALL Exchange
recipients.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Ola Theander
