Re: Server 2003 SP1

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I am running E2K3 with W2K3 SP1 in a number of places. If you have Dell
servers, there are some possible considerations (making sure your Open
Manage software is up-to-date)

Here are a few of my own notes about doing this along with a couple of
Microsoft links:

The most important thing is to make sure that all of your 3rd party
equipment, device drivers, and software is compatible with SP1. Sometimes
the vendors are behind in getting their software up to date.

A place where I have had some issues with Windows 2003 SP1 is in
environments where they use very tightly configured security templates and
permissions to some of the services (such as the Windows Time service and
Network Connections) have really been tweaked and restricted (restricted
from the defaults). There seem to have been some changes to improve
security in SP1 that can break your own customized security tweaks. I have
seen newsgroups chatter related to this, but really can't offer any
additional insight as I have just had to make sure that the correct
permissions are given to Network Service and SYSTEM when this has occured.
But, I work with some pretty specific, hardened Windows systems; they were
hardened with non-Microsoft templates, which probably explains the problems.
:-)
