I see where you are coming from but it's still a no.
Introduce a new FE on temporary hardware and flatten the other box.
Reinstall with Standard. Good news there is that you probably get a
cheaper upgrade since you have a spare E2K enterprise that you can
take to E2K3 enterprise.

See above. New (temporary one), flatten old, rebuild old with
standard, decomission temporary.
Use E2K Enterprise on the BE until you're ready to spend on E2K3
Enterptise upgrade.
