Exhange SP1

Hi,
I've recently installed a Windows 2003 SBS server to replace the NT4 Server
and the Exchange 5.5 server in my company. I used the Exchange Migration tool
to import the old mailboxes and create the Active Directory users. This went
perfectly. I then ran into trouble in that the Exchange System Manager
crashed every time I tried to open it. It threw up the message box which asks
whether you want to send an error report to microsoft or not. When I sent the
error report I was redirected to a page which said that the cause of the
problem was unknown, but that I should make sure the exchange server was up
to date. I duly downloaded SP1 and began the install, having applied the
relevant hotfixes first. The SP1 install failed on the "Exchange Messaging
and Collaboration Service" and gave the following error
"0xc007041d - The service did not respond to the start or control request in
a timely fashion. (EXIFS) "
After restarting the server I was able to use the ESM again so my initial
reaction was that the SP had worked, somewhat. However, this soon proved not
to be the case as I had users complaining that messages were not leaving
their outbox and that incoming mail was not being received. Looking at the
queues the "local delivery" and "messages waiting directory lookup" queues
are permanently in a retry state and the mail never gets delivered.
I am making a fairly big assumption that the SP upgrade and the problems
with mail delivery are related. I have turned the diagnostics logging up to
maximum on a number of the SMTP and other transport services but they don't
seem to reveal anything, but then again I'm probably looking in the wrong
place. It may be worth noting that I also installed Sage (an accounting
package) and eScan Corporate edition on the server earlier in the same day as
I tried to do the SP upgrade.
Interestingly in ESM it says that the server version is 6.5(build 6944.44).
I assume there is some reference to SP1 if its been properly installed.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated and apologies if this is all very
long winded but I feel its better to as specific as possible.
Thanks in advance,
Mark Duggan
