A cost (and hardware configuration) issue will be the number of separate
channels and the RAID adapter. It's highly recommended that each array be on
its own separate channel. Drive throughput is a major problem with Exchange.
It's probably safe to assume that the OP's original configuration is a
2-channel adapter (a single internal channel will be a big mistake). It's
either impossible or prohibitively expensive to get a RAID adapter with more
than 2 internal channels. This means that with 3 arrays, you will almost
certainly need 2 RAID adapters. Also, if you want separate channels, most
servers that I've looked at (Dell and HP) require additional hardware to
accomplish this. Usually, you have to split the backplane in two and also
add a kit to convert the external drive bays into another array.
Believe me, a good 3 RAID array server gets pricey very fast....
