X400 and X500 email address?

What are the X400 and X500 email address used for in Exchange 2000/2003? I
had the understanding that these addresses were only for legacy systems and
that 2000/2003 did everything over SMTP.
If you change the alias on one's primary SMTP address say from
user2@xxxxxxxxxx to user@xxxxxxxxxx do you have to change the X400/X500
addresses to?
