exchange 5.5 service account permissions

Exchange 5.5 - I always thought the service account that installs and runs
the services, needs to be a domain admin account. I've heard now, that it
doesn't, it only needs domain user access. Is this correct? I don't want
to change the permissions on my service account and run into problems.
