    Just figured it out.

    We have an IPS system running on a SonicWall firewall at this site. I found
    a logged "attack" corresponding to each attempt I made to open one of the
    problem messages. Told the IPS to ignore this specific type of "attack", and
    it now works. If you need more specific info on the actuall log entries
    (just in case you have a SonicWall IPS running), let me know.
