I kind of agree.
I'd comment (from a point of ignorance because you don't tell us) that
your tape drive should be large enough to do a full backup onto a
single tape, unless you've bought enterprise Edition.

Next is, if you've got a spare 32GB (max) then I would indeed backup
to a BKF file on the machine and then spool that off to tape. If you
need to do a restore of the box, and remember you can use the Recovery
Storage Group to do quick single item restores, then having the bkf
file from yesterday is quicker than digging the tape back from the
data warehouse. As far as timings go, I tend to suggest that the
system state goes off at 10pm, the drive letter level goes at 10:30
and then the stores at 11:30. It's less complex and you can see what's
going on in the logs as all times are a known known (apols to Mr
Rumsfeld)

As far as the bks files go, since you create the job on a schedule
you'll only have to do one navigation away from the profile (which I
agree is ridiculous)
