Hi to the Gurus amongst you, sorry about the length of this but I feel the
need to fill you in with the scenario before I ask the questions.
I have just got a new job with a global company. I used to work at a school
before with two domains and about 800 users. I have installed and
maintained Exchange 2002 at the school. The new company wants to get better
organised with their e-mail. They are not running any form of Exchange,
they have Linux servers with their own portal and a couple or three W2k
servers (Don't know yet which service packs are installed). They are using
Outlook but do not have any of the features that would be useful for them,
I.e. calendar and meetings etc. They also have a few Laptops and they want
them to have remote access.
I want to install Exchange and manage all their e-mail etc. I am familiar
with Exchange 2002 but I have never seen 2003 yet. The company is made up of
many companies with the parent company having control (in the one building
where I work). However they do have other offices spread around the UK and
offices in many other countries all round the world. I want to be able to
run all e-mail for about 5 companies from the head office. There appears to
be about 3 domains maybe more (sorry about the uncertainty as I only started
there last Wednesday <g>). It seems that everything has been installed ad
hoc with no one taking control or organising it. Which is why I got the
job, to try and make some sense of it all.
Now for the questions...
Can I run Exchange 2003 on the one machine which will run the e-mail for
each domain or company? Or will this require an Exchange server for each
domain? I know that would be ideal but I got the job on the basis that I can
save them money by being there all the time to maintain everything <g>. If I
start to suggest buying a heap of servers they will not be happy, perhaps as
time goes by and I have proved myself things may change.
At the school all I did was set up trust relationships and point the DNS at
the appropriate server for their e-mail to work but that was using the same
domain address for the school. In the company there are a number of
different addresses. Can a single Exchange 2003 server look after a number
of domains? At the moment there are about 30 computers with a variety of
OS's and different versions of Office. I want to standardise all this and I
think getting Exchange is one of the first things to do before I hit the
workstations (30 workstations after 200 at the school should be a dream <g>)
That's the basis of my first questions, I know I will be back with more as I
start to implement some of these changes.
Thanks and regards
Edd
