Yes, there IS away to disable NDR with Exchange 5.5.
Look up Microsoft KB 837794.

The hotfix requires Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4 (SP4). You
will have to contact Microsoft to get the hotfix. It is free though.
