In a default state having 80 open should do the trick, either to
machine name if it's available in DNS or by IP addres like you
surmised.
I'd check that there's no NAT going on and the traffic is going where
you think it's going. Also just try browsing to the server and see if
you get the "Under Construction"
Another possible is that you've put a certificate on the box, say for
a website and the /exchange virtual directory has inherited the
Require SSL tickbox.
