Permissions required in Exchange Directory?

This morning I noticed an "unknown account' had
permissions to containers within my Exchange 5.5 directory
structure, I removed this unknown account but this
resulted in no users being able to view the Global Address
List.
I added the domain users group to all levels of the
directory and now viewing the GAL is fine however I would
like to know what permissions and at what levels should
this action be performed. Obviously I do not want to grant
more permissions than are neccesary.
Thanks in advance
