I'm trying to confirm that I have done this properly. We have a SBS2000
server running Exchange 2000 with the POP3 Connector. Call the domain
blah.local. We want to be able to get internet email for blah.com. The ISP
controls the actual mail server. There are some users that need to get mail
to their blah.com email address that are external -- they are not within the
blah.local domain -- they are just remote machines that will get their mail
via POP3 or IMAP4 directly from the ISP's server. The ones that are within
the blah.local domain and are normal users in that same office will get their
email via Outlook and Exchange -- and Exchange will get those emails via the
POP3 Connector. Of course, those within the domain will be sending local
emails back and forth also.
What I have done is configured the Exchange server to handle mail for
blah.local. So, in the Recipient Policies section, for BLAH at the highest
priority, under E-Mail Addresses (Policy), I have SMTP configured for
@blah.local (and not @blah.com, since it really isn't the main server for
blah.com). Of course, X440 is configured also to handle mail for BLAH.
POP3 Connector is configured for each user to go to the ISP-controlled mail
server (which is the actual MX record machine for blah.com, of course), get
their mail, and dump it into their local Exchange account. This works fine.
Remote users connect directly to the ISP's server to get their blah.com mail
also -- and that works fine.
My question comes to configuring the individual users. To get things to work
properly, I have to give each of them two SMTP email addresses in the Active
Directory "E-mail Addresses" setup:
janedoe@blah.local
janedoe@blah.com
And then set the blah.com one to be the default. Otherwise, when they send
mail out (which goes through Exchange which is then configured to use a Smart
Host -- which is that same ISP-controlled server -- for all outgoing mail),
they go out with janedoe@blah.local as the return address instead of
janedoe@blah.com. If I have JUST the janedoe@blah.com email, then I have
other issues with local mail not being properly delivered. (Note that the
users have their X400 address also.)
So, it actually seems correct to me: tell the Exchange server that it handles
mail for blah.local, use the POP3 Connector to get mail for blah.com from the
actual server on the internet, and configure each user with two SMTP email
addresses -- their @blah.local one and their @blah.com one -- with the
@blah.com one as the default so that outgoing mail is properly
return-addressed.
Is that the proper way to do it?
Thanks!
