What you need is a setting cheked in the sort dialog: "My table has headers".
This will automatically be checked if you format the first row differently, like Bold

I suspect it may be onecare related..
onecare is changing all my office security settings to high. And I can't stop
it from doing it. So it's probably the source of this problem. And I'd need a
way to make it permanent that onecare's security changing would have no
effect..

I have a shopping list..
left 1st column A1 is text items to shop for [top label is items]
Top row is labels of how to operate on the different items, cost, store aisle,
how many needed, how many missing, how many on hand etc.. with a total cost at
the very bottom row 61 on down.

To prevent the cost items from getting sorted I gave those items a prefix of
[Z] to keep them locked at the bottom of the ***.

I've had this set to NOT sort row 1 before at least a year. This problem has
occurred before. But I can't remember how I fixed it.

I put the cursor on B2 and hit freeze. that worked for scrolling down and left
keeping items, in place, and scrolling down, it kept row 1 in view.

I also tried split, but that's most definitely what I've been using for years.

I've locked with freeze the top row, and left column. Trouble is when I sort
the 1st column [items], it also sorts row 1..

Would be nice to know exactly what changed my settings, and what I need to set
to get the *** back to it's previous state with row 1, column 1 locked, but
separate to allow sorting the items alphabetically.
