random crash

Hi all, I have a customer working in Excel for various things, but one
of them is his price list. Right now he as Office 2003 installed with
SP2 (11.8142.8132). As far as I know, the updates are all done (he's
got Microsoft Update installed).
For some reason, he will sometime work in Excel all day long without a
problem (yesterday), but other days he'll be crashing really often,
preventing him to do his job.
Here's what he's working with. He's got this Excel spreadsheet that's
about 440MB in size, with about 20 different sheets. 3 of them have
about 40000+ lines in them, with margin calculation and a link to an
external spreasheet (margin table) for his margin rates. It will not
always crash while doing the same thing, for exemple sometimes it will
crash while he's adding a column (40000+ records), it might crash on a
sort, it will even crash if he tries to resize a column so that he can
see all the data.
I'm really at a loss here as to what could cause the crash, he's got a
brand new machine with an Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, WinXP Pro, and it
doesn't crash anywhere else.

Hopefully I can get a fix for this client, as this is a big part of
