excel compatibility

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

i have a friend who is running windows 3.1 and excel 5, when she tries to
open in a newer version, not sure which version but when she tries to open
spread *** she gets an error. the old excel was modified for her business.
are these older versions not compatible? are the formulas that different from
version to version?
